The WeaverBird is a keen observer of the little power struggles of life. The Buffalo, it seems, challenged the Elephant Queen to a contest of strength, the winner to be known as the Champ. The method chosen was a board game, called Tavli (rather like the more civilised game of Backgammon).
At first, so the Weaver sings, it seemed that the envious and bossy Buffalo would win, but the cool and elegant Elephant Queen tossed a cunning double six, thus winning the championship.
Not her face, but her nature, is love-ly. Her gentleness rivals the dove-ly. But the pachyderm’s toss Beats the buffalo’s boss And her nature, when Champion, is tough-ly.
A boss is a the lumpy thing on a buffalo’s head, between his horns, just where his brain ought to be. The bos taurus is the Latin name for a cow, and the word ‘boss’, or ‘baas’ offends African is Buffalo deeply.
But the Buffalo got his revenge, or so the WeaverBird says.
